This special and unique characteristic of protruding eyes is actually not visible at the early stage of their life but is developed as they mature. Their eyes are actually placed at the top of a tiny blunt cone sticking out of their heads, so to people who developed this breed these small blunt conical eye sockets appeared to be small telescopes hanging out of their skulls, hence they named it as the telescope goldfish. They actually got their breed name the telescope goldfish because of their eyes. This feature is common in the telescope goldfish, the black moor goldfish, and the panda moor goldfish.
